The Project

Project Overview:

The new Te Ara Mātauranga library at Auckland Grammar School, a beacon of academic resources, opened its doors in October 2023. Meaning “pathway to knowledge” in Te Reo Māori, the library spans two levels featuring extensive fiction and non-fiction collections, two full-sized classrooms, a computer suite capable of hosting a full class, and multiple breakout areas for student collaboration.

Challenges:

Located on a challenging site composed of volcanic rock on the school’s northern boundary, construction involved significant preparatory work including demolition, shoring up existing rock walls, and extensive earthworks. The volcanic terrain required a robust and watertight tanking solution to withstand the physical demands of the site and ensure structural longevity.

Allco Solution:

To address these challenges, Allco utilised its Volclay tanking range, known for its self-healing and self-sealing properties:

  • Voltex Membrane: Applied to the lift pits and underslab, praised for its “immaculate” installation which perfectly accommodates the volcanic site conditions.
  • Swelltite Membrane: Used on blockwork, enhancing the structure’s ability to handle water exposure and geological shifts.
  • Allsheet 500: Employed at the footings for additional damp-proofing, meticulously installed by MPM Waterproofing.

Execution and Outcomes:

The project faced substantial challenges with the volcanic rock during construction, especially near the lift pits, but the main contractor adeptly managed these issues. The meticulous application by our approved applicators MPM Waterproofing, supported by frequent site visits and technical advice from our Technical Advisory team members Adrian Crow and Jason Bland, ensured high waterproofing and structural integrity standards.
